Everything a private sale receipt should say.

Who sold it, who bought it

Both names and addresses, so either side can prove the sale happened if a parking fine or speeding ticket turns up later.

Exactly which car

Registration, VIN, mileage on the day, colour and MOT expiry. The mileage line is the one people argue about, so it is written down.

What was handed over

The green V5C/2 new keeper slip, number of keys, service history and any spares. Tick what changed hands.

The money, in words and numbers

Price, deposit already paid, balance paid today and how. Bank transfer, cash or a mix.

Sold as seen

The plain-English private-sale wording: sold as seen, tried and tested, no warranty. This is allowed between private individuals and it protects the seller.

The DVLA bit

A reminder that the seller tells DVLA, the buyer keeps the green V5C/2 slip, and road tax does not transfer with the car.

Made on your phone

There is no account. The receipt is built in your browser. If you choose "get a link", one copy is stored so the buyer can open it; otherwise nothing is uploaded at all.

Free, and staying free

InvoiceMyCar is a small tool from Carifly, who make software for car dealers. This one is for everyone else.

Not legal advice

The wording covers what a normal private sale needs. If the sale is unusual, finance still owed, a write-off, a car bought for a business, take advice.

Questions people ask on the driveway.

Is a receipt legally required? No, but without one it is your word against theirs on the price, the mileage and the date. A signed receipt settles all three.
Can I really sell "as seen"?Between two private individuals, yes. The Consumer Rights Act applies to businesses, not to you. The car must still be as you described it.
Who tells DVLA?The seller does, online, straight away. The buyer keeps the green V5C/2 new keeper slip until the new logbook arrives; the seller keeps the rest of the V5C.
Does the road tax go with the car?No. Tax ends when DVLA is told of the sale and the seller gets a refund for full months left. The buyer must tax it before driving away.
What if there is still finance on the car?It must be settled before the car can be sold. If you are not sure, run a history check before you take any money.
Do I need to print it?No. Each of you gets the PDF on your phone, or a link. Print it if you like paper.
